My first impresions of what is Web 2.0 thought It was diffrent ways web sites were made, the course material started with us watching Web 2.0… The machine is Us/ing Us.
Why would I link the entire Video instead of a summary I thought it was one of the most interesting clips I have seen and it raises so many questions about the web all I can say is Web 2.0 is linking people.
In the course notes we learn that the Web 2.0 is not a new program but a way to encompass the change in technology , approaches to Web development and people’s use of the Web that have occured since around 2003.
When going to the O’Reilly Blog he puts the following table on how we have moved from Web 1.0 to 2.0
| Web 1.0 | Web 2.0 | |
|---|---|---|
| DoubleClick | –> | Google AdSense |
| Ofoto | –> | Flickr |
| Akamai | –> | BitTorrent |
| mp3.com | –> | Napster |
| Britannica Online | –> | Wikipedia |
| personal websites | –> | blogging |
| evite | –> | upcoming.org and EVDB |
| domain name speculation | –> | search engine optimization |
| page views | –> | cost per click |
| screen scraping | –> | web services |
| publishing | –> | participation |
| content management systems | –> | wikis |
| directories (taxonomy) | –> | tagging (“folksonomy”) |
| stickiness | –> | syndication |
A great conversation began on the NET 11 Discussion board about this little fella -

It is amazing how even popular culture has followed on with the 2.0 naming most the posts and emails show a large divide between the pro iSnack and Anti iSnack movements, Which has led to the further debate is Web 2.0 an apropriate name should it really be Web 1.1 and are we to early to really call it Web 2.0?
The first task we are given to go to this page and note the breaking news section.
Then in the course notes it has an RSS (Really Simple Syndication) feed giving the current breaking news head lines, the content is being pulled directly from the news page to the RSS feed on the page .
The most interesting thing about RSS is that the content is delivered separately from the page itself, a great use of this is when you want to get updates from several sites instead of going to each site you can just have an RSS feed from each site you want information from. RSS is not only used for News web sites but can also be used for Blogs and any Updates you can Imagine we learn that is a basic example of dynamic content.
An easy task all-ready done it lol I have been using Delicious for a while now and highly recommend it but for the sake of this blog I will cover the activity anyway.
ok delicious website here go and do the normal registration stuff follow the bouncing ball and you will have one of the most use full bookmark application you can find I use this between friends and work colleagues so it does not matter where I am I can still access all my and my friends bookmarks no matter where I am.

My first experience with the web would have been when we got our first computer and connecting to the web via Microsoft Encarta and being able to search for everything and anything.
I guess it just felt natural even though I had never used it before it felt like it was supposed to be this seemless.
Sean Pryor posted on the boards that he liked to “think of the Web as being something organic and the Internet as being inorganic, that is it the Web is the human interaction side to the Internet machine” which I have to agree it is easy to separate the two like this simply the internet is the cold infrastructure and the web is the personal side the side that is there for us to see.
Now to this weeks Activities or should I say not this week

Here we are week 2 and we have the question what is the Internet? We started with the unit content which covered networking basics with some rather humorous videos one that stood out was the warriors of the Net video rather comical but at least it showed what happens with a packet of data, Dr Tama Leaver during his podcast gave a “few words of warning!” about what the Internet is and is not, Where the Internet came from and what did people do with the Internet. I will move on the the activities for the Unit and will cover what I think the Internet is at the end of this entry.
ACTIVITY 1
For our first Activity we get to use a site called You get signal to run a proxy trace to find the path from our commputer’s to the wesite’s location first we do a proxy trace from my location to google.

Next up we have to find the geographical location of the headquarters of
And last up we have to find a popular web site not hosted in the US or Australia.
I am using Forge World a popular website for war gamers around the world located at http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/ the results I go were verio.net London, H9
United Kingdom
ACTIVITY 2
Our second activity was too find out who owns domain names, using AutoWhoIs (a protocol used to find further information about domains and ip addresses) the first link we were given to try was curtin.edu which as I found out to be incorrect and checking the website the correct address was curtin.edu.au which lead to some discussion about the error/mistake.
Next we were asked to do checks on the following
And do a check for the following domain names:
And finally were asked who owns the above domain names ? and why we think this is ?
I think the main reason for google and Yahoo owning these sites would be to ensure customers get to there site regardless of incorrect spelling of there name, another reason would be to stop cyber squatters taking up residence for there own gain.
OTHER STUFF
The Internet is not the World Wide Web or TCP/IP or Cyberspace the Internet is the system of hardware and software which enables the connection of multiple computers.

ACTIVITY 1

Availability of Skemma as a user name.
ACTIVITY 2
During the course introduction lecture given by Tama via podcast, the group was asked to answer four questions about our on-line activities in the past week for no nefarious reasons we have been told these were the questions.
My answers to this activity were as follows.
1 – Email one of the banes of my existence I have several email accounts a joint one which I share with my wife a personal email account as well as 2 diff rent work email accounts which need to be checked several times a day as for my personal and joint email usually gets checked after work and be for I go to bed for the night.
2 – I have used a social networking site in the last week I usually jump on line and check Face book once every few days, I am fairly new to Face book I use to keep in contact with friends and family overseas and work mates that are deployed overseas with the ADF.
3 – Waching of video content online is somthing I do daily sometimes it will be news casts lookings at a humorous you tube link and off course checking updates on the Old Rebublic Star Wars online game comming in the near future.
4 – Creating Media in he pas week defiantly I update media at work on the defence networks as well as regally share pictures with friends and family online.
OTHER STUFF
I picked up some very useful tools this week the high light would have to be Delicious this is a great tool for sharing book marks with people as long as you put in some basic details I have used this with several of my friends to pass information on it works so much better then just emailing URL’s
Gwyneh Peay one of our online tutors posted these statistics gathered from Acivity 2,
“36/37 students used email. Many use it all day everyday for work. As somebody pointed out, email is the new telephone.
29/37 have used a networking site
Facebook is the key application here, although a significant number of people feel less than enthusiastic about it as a medium of communication.
35/37 have watched videos online
The majority of people use youtube to seek out humorous clips and entertainment, although it is also a source of useful ‘in plain English’ tutorials.
17/37 have created media content
Less than 50% created media content this week. Those that did primarily used Twitter and blogs. This may be a misleading figure however, for there was some discussion regarding what actually constitutes ‘content.’ At the very least, many people do not perceive themselves to be active media creators.”
I would have to say that I am not surprised with such high numbers considering we are studying the Internet.
